Job Description

Overview

We are seeking an experienced Controller with a strong background in the nonprofit industry. This role oversees all financial and accounting operations, ensuring accuracy, transparency, compliance with GAAP, and adherence to nonprofit-specific reporting standards. The Controller will manage daily accounting functions, lead financial reporting and audits, and support strategic financial planning across the organization.


Key Responsibilities

Financial Management & Reporting

  • Oversee AP, AR, payroll, general ledger, and banking activities.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards.
  • Manage cash flow, forecasting, internal controls, and fund accounting.
  • Maintain chart of accounts appropriate for a nonprofit structure.

Budgeting & Analysis

  • Lead the annual budgeting process and collaborate with program managers to track program spending.
  • Provide financial analysis, variance reporting, and recommendations to leadership and the board.
  • Identify financial risks and opportunities to support organizational decision-making.

Grant Accounting & Compliance

  • Manage grant-specific accounting, restricted funds, allocation tracking, and compliance with grantor requirements.
  • Prepare financial reports for funders and assist with grant-related audits.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and nonprofit regulatory requirements.

Audit & Tax

  • Oversee the annual external audit, including preparation of required schedules and support documentation.
  • Coordinate preparation of the annual Form 990.
  • Implement process improvements based on auditor recommendations.

Systems & Process Improvement

  • Maintain and optimize financial systems and accounting software.
  • Document and update accounting policies and internal controls.
  • Recommend workflow and process improvements to increase efficiency.

Team Leadership

  • Supervise accounting team members and ensure timely completion of accounting tasks.
  • Provide mentorship, training, and ongoing development.
  • Foster a mission-driven, collaborative finance culture.

Qualifications

  • Nonprofit accounting experience required (minimum 3-5+ years).
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA preferred).
  • Strong knowledge of fund accounting and nonprofit GAAP.
  • Experience managing restricted funds and grant reporting.
  • Proficiency with nonprofit accounting systems (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage Intacct, MIP, NetSuite).
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to balance multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Commitment to the organization's mission and values.

Preferred Competencies

  • Ability to communicate financial concepts to non-financial staff.
